RLS Land Solutions handles excavation and dirt work in Blessing, Texas. We are a family outfit based in Needville, and we have run this equipment for 15 years. Our smallest excavators weigh about 50,000 pounds. We also run large excavators and a fleet of tandem dump trucks. That size matches the work down here. The work here starts with excavation and dirt work, and the rest follows from it. We clear land, dig ponds and lakes, build pads and cut ranch roads. We do rough and finish grading, drainage work and dirt hauling. Land clearing on our jobs is done with big excavators and dozers. Trees and brush get pushed out or dug out, then hauled off or burned. On a pad site we strip the topsoil and bring in select fill. Then we build it up in lifts and compact each one. Most tracts need several of these at once, so we run them in sequence.
We work for ranch owners, builders, developers and industrial projects. In Matagorda County that means big ag tracts, pasture cleanup, stock ponds and pad sites. Cleared trees and brush leave the site on our trucks and go to a green waste site we own. That keeps disposal simple and keeps the tract clean. We are open 24 hours, and on volume jobs we will run shifts around the clock. Some projects want dirt moving day and night until the pad is up. We can staff it that way. Our minimum project size is about $10,000, so we are set up for acres rather than corners.
Matagorda County sits on the Gulf Coast prairie, and the ground reflects that. Upland soils here run to dark clay loams and heavy clay. In places the clay cracks open when it dries and swells shut when it rains. Water moves slowly across flat ground like this. Ground that holds water is part of why this became rice country. For building, it means elevation and drainage do most of the work. A pad has to sit high enough, and the grade has to carry water away from it. We cut ditches, shape swales and set slope so the site drains after a storm.
Material is the other half of the cost down here. Sand and select fill are scarcer near the coast, so most of it comes from farther inland. Every mile of haul shows up in the total. On a job that runs hundreds of loads, that gap gets large. Loading from pits we own gives us control over the material cost. Matagorda County is also drawing bigger projects now. Data centers have been announced in the county, and a rail yard is planned near Elmaton. Sites like those need volume dirt work on a set schedule.
