Excavation and dirt work in Guy runs out of our base in Needville, two miles up Highway 36. We have worked this prairie for 15 years. Guy sits at the crossroads of Highway 36 and FM 1994, the Guy-Long Point Road, in south Fort Bend County. The land around it is cattle pasture, hay meadow, row crop field and acreage tracts. Most of it is flat, and most of it is clay. That clay decides how a pond, a pad or a road has to be built. Our sand and dirt pits sit in this same corner of the county. A load of fill reaches a job site here in minutes.
RLS Land Solutions is a family business, the Comparetto family, and we run heavy equipment. Our smallest excavators weigh 50,000 pounds. We also run large excavators and a fleet of tandem dump trucks. That is the size of machine most jobs out here need. Work runs to ranch ponds, building pads, pushed fence lines and hundreds of loads of select fill. We own two sand and dirt pits in southeast Fort Bend County, so the material comes from us. Cleared trees and brush go to our own green waste site. We are open 24 hours, and we will run shifts when a job calls for it.

The land here sits about 75 feet above sea level, flat coastal prairie. The soil is heavy clay. The Bernard series, one of the main soils in the area, was first described in Fort Bend County. It drains slowly and stays wet through winter and early spring. The county gets over 45 inches of rain in a normal year. Big Creek carries much of that water southeast toward the Brazos River. The county keeps flood gauges on it at Highway 36 and FM 1994. On flat clay, water sits where it falls. Grading in Guy is about giving it a path out. We cut fall into a field, shape drainage and raise the ground that has to stay dry.
Clay is also why ponds hold well out here. A pond dug in this ground keeps water without a liner. The key is cutting a core trench into tight clay and building the dam up in lifts. We dig stock tanks and larger lakes for ranches around Guy and Long Point. The same clay makes a poor driving surface. A ranch road on raw Fort Bend clay turns to soup after a wet week. We build roads up on select fill from our pits, then cap them with road base. Trucks and stock trailers can use them year round after that.
Distance is the quiet cost in any dirt job. Every yard of fill gets dug, trucked and dumped. When the pit is an hour off, most of the day goes to driving. Our two pits sit in southeast Fort Bend County, close to Guy. A tandem truck can run loads to a site here all day and keep at it. That is how a job measured in hundreds of loads stays on schedule. We sell select fill, fill dirt, sand and sandy loam out of those pits. Same-day delivery is normal on a job this close. On a volume job we can keep trucks moving around the clock.
Most calls from around Guy fall into a handful of jobs. A rancher wants a new tank dug or an old one cleaned out and reshaped. Someone buys acreage off FM 1994 and needs a house pad, a drive and a clean building site. A farmer wants fence lines pushed back and the brush hauled off. A builder needs select fill delivered and a pad shaped to grade. We clear with large excavators and dozer class equipment. Trees and brush get pushed out, dug out and hauled to our own green waste site. Some jobs are burned on site instead, where that is allowed.
