Grading in hill country is about controlling water that already moves. Here it is the reverse. Around El Campo you have to give water a reason to go anywhere. A half foot of fall across a hundred feet makes a workable slope. Plenty of sites out here do not have that much to start with. So we build it. We check elevations across the site before the first cut and set the high and low points on purpose. Then the machine works to those numbers. The finished surface looks flat to the eye and still drains.
Where the water goes is the other half of the question. A site can be graded perfectly and still flood if the outfall is blocked. We look at the road ditch, the field ditch or the drain the site has to reach. Sometimes that ditch is full of silt and brush. Cleaning it out does more than any grading on the pad. On flat ground the whole path matters, from the high point to the county ditch. We follow it out and tell you what we find before quoting the work.
Farm ground around El Campo has been worked a long time. Turn rows get rutted and headlands get low. Equipment tracks the same line every year and the soil moves toward the middle. Over time the edge sits lower than the field and holds water after every rain. That corner comes up short at harvest or does not get planted at all. We regrade the headland, pull the ditch back to shape and set the fall toward the outlet. It is a small amount of dirt for the acres it puts back in production.
Rice ground has its own shape and we respect it. Levees, checks and turnouts were set for a reason, and moving them changes how a field floods. We do not touch them unless you tell us to. Where a field has come out of rice and gone to pasture or row crop, the old levees may be in the way. Knocking them down and reworking the surface is normal work for us. So is opening the field ditches that have grown up. Tell us how the field is being farmed now and we will grade to that.
A house on acreage out here needs the ground set up right before anything gets built. The pad has to sit high. The yard has to fall away from the slab in every direction. The drive needs a crown so water sheds instead of ponding in the ruts. Culverts under the drive have to sit at the ditch flow line, not above it. We handle all of that as one grade rather than four separate jobs. Where the site needs to come up, we bring select fill from our own pits and build it.
Existing places have the opposite problem. The house is already there and water is already going the wrong way. Usually the yard has settled, or a new drive or shop changed where the runoff goes. We can regrade the yard, cut a shallow swale to carry water around the house and reset the drive. On heavy clay the swale has to be wide and shallow so a mower can cross it. Deep, narrow ditches next to a house look bad and fill with grass. Wide and shallow moves the same water and stays maintainable.
